Het bedrijf Össur, onderdeel van Embla Medical, ontwerpt en produceert high tech protheses, bionische handen, braces en andere hulpmiddelen voor het menselijk lichaam. De onderneming, met vestigingen over de hele wereld, kent haar oorsprong in het IJslandse Reykjavik, waar het hoofdkantoor is gevestigd. Sinds 2018 werkt Dreessen Willemse Architecten aan een meerjarig masterplan voor uitbreiding en vernieuwing van het hoofdkantoor en de bijbehorende productiefaciliteiten. Hierin spelen de nieuwe hoofdentree met het bedrijfsrestaurant Midgardur en de nieuwbouw en herinrichting van de R&D werkomgeving een sleutelrol.

De R&D-offices met in totaal ca. 150 werkplekken zijn ontworpen als een gedifferentieerde werkomgeving, die uitnodigt tot activity based werken. In de open werkomgeving zijn kleine en grotere volumes geplaatst, die de open werkomgeving verdeelt in kleinere, half open ruimtes, waarin teams samenwerken. In de volumes bevinden zich (digitale) vergader, brainstorm- en focusruimtes. Daarnaast zijn er (half-) gesloten treincoupé‘s, focus- en belwerkplekken, een woonkamer en een bibliotheek.
Het ruimtelijk concept voor het research & development team onderscheidt zich juist als één grote, open ruimte. Deze openheid biedt flexibiliteit om grote teams steeds in andere samenstellingen te laten samenwerken aan productontwikkelingen en -innovaties. De ruimte wordt verdeeld door een centrale as, bestaande uit een serie modulaire, verplaatsbare, focus booths met treincoupé‘s, bar pods en belwerkplekken. Deze individuele ruimtes worden gebruikt voor kort en digitaal overleg. Mobiele whiteboards ondersteunen het werkproces en vormen flexibele afscheidingen. De zwarte, open plafonds zorgen samen met de antraciete booths en akoestische schermen voor een rustige achtergrond waarin geconcentreerd kan worden gewerkt. Onderdeel van het ontwerp zijn ook de elektronische en mechanische laboratoria.
Centraal in de R&D offices ligt een trappenhuis, waar de in het werk gestorte betonnen wanden zichtbaar zijn, een voor IJsland typische bouwwijze met bekisting uit houten planken. Hier verwijzen drie in eiken gekaderde moswanden in de vorm van het IJslandse landschap naar de oorsprong van het bedrijf. In eikenhouten displays staan diverse producten en prototypes die Össur door de jaren heen ontwikkeld heeft.

The company Össur, part of Embla Medical, designs and produces high-tech prosthetics, bionic hands, braces and other aids for the human body. The company, with offices all over the world, has its origins in Reykjavik, Iceland, where its head office is located. Since 2018, Dreessen Willemse Architecten has been working on a multi-year master plan for expansion and renovation of the headquarters and associated production facilities. The new main entrance with the Midgardur company restaurant and the new construction of the R&D working environment play a key role in this.

The R&D offices with a total of approximately 150 workplaces are designed as a differentiated working environment that invites activity-based working. Small and larger volumes have been placed in the open work environment, which divides the open work environment into smaller, semi-open spaces in which teams work together. The volumes contain (digital) meetings, brainstorming and focus rooms. In addition, there are (semi-) closed train compartments, focus and calling workstations, a living room and a library.
The spatial concept for the research & development team distinguishes itself as one large, open space. This openness offers flexibility to allow large teams to work together in different compositions on product developments and innovations. The space is divided by a central axis, consisting of a series of modular, movable, focus booths with train compartments, bar pods and call desks. These individual rooms are used for short and digital consultations. Mobile whiteboards support the work process and form flexible partitions. The black, open ceilings, together with the anthracite booths and acoustic screens, provide a quiet background in which you can work with concentration. The electronic and mechanical laboratories are also part of the design.
Centrally located in the R&D offices is a stairwell, where the cast-in-place concrete walls are visible, a typical Icelandic construction method with formwork made of wooden planks. Here, three moss walls framed in oak in the shape of the Icelandic landscape refer to the origins of the company. Oak displays contain various products and prototypes that Össur has developed over the years.
